North Side Dennis: Hills, Lakes and Historic Homes

Dennis Village and East Dennis sit along Route 6A on the Cape Cod Bay side, where the land rolls up toward Scargo Hill. From Scargo Tower you can see across the bay, and the homes around Scargo Lake and the Cape Playhouse are older, shaded and often surrounded by stone walls and long established plantings. Yards here are about maintenance done right: shaping old shrubs, keeping beds crisp and pruning mature trees without butchering them.

This side of town is also inside the Old King’s Highway Regional Historic District. A new fence, wall or entry feature visible from the road may need approval from the Dennis committee of the district, so we talk about that before designing anything that changes how the property looks from the street.

South Side Dennis: Sand, Salt and Summer Traffic

Dennis Port and West Dennis face Nantucket Sound, and the yards are a different world. Lots are smaller, the soil is pure sand, and the summer brings rentals, cottages and full driveways. Lawns along Lower County Road and near West Dennis Beach dry out quickly, and salt spray limits what grows on the water side of the house.

South Dennis sits between the two, with the Swan River and Bass River marshes cutting through neighborhoods of capes and ranches. Lots that back up to marsh fall under the Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act, so the Dennis Conservation Commission can review clearing, grading and new hardscape within 100 feet of the resource area.

Storm Readiness for Dennis Trees

When the July 2019 tornadoes and severe storms hit the Mid-Cape, Dennis was one of the towns with the most power outages, largely from trees and limbs on lines. Pitch pines and oaks are the backbone of the Dennis canopy, and in sandy ground they can fail with less wind than you would expect.

Our tree work in Dennis focuses on the trees that could actually hurt something: limbs over the roof, dead tops near the driveway, pines leaning toward the house. Thinning and deadwood removal before fall lets the wind pass through, and removing the worst trees on our schedule beats waiting for an emergency after a nor’easter.

Bay side or sound side, one call covers it

Dennis is a long town, and owners often have a cottage on one side and family on the other. One insured company handles cleanup, trees, stonework and mowing anywhere in town, the estimate visit is free, and you usually get a reply within about an hour on business days. If a visit falls short, we come back and redo it at no cost.
