Three Villages, Three Kinds of Yard

Yarmouth runs the full width of the Cape, and its three villages look nothing alike. Yarmouth Port, on the bay side along Route 6A, is old sea captain country: big historic homes, stone walls, lilacs and mature shade trees along what locals call the Captains’ Mile. Yards here reward patient pruning and careful bed work more than anything flashy.

South Yarmouth and the Bass River neighborhoods mix older capes with water view homes along the river, where lawns meet marsh and salt spray. West Yarmouth, between Route 28 and Lewis Bay, is denser, with smaller lots, rental cottages and plenty of pitch pine. Each village needs its own mowing height, plant list and cleanup timing, and we treat them that way.

What the 2019 Tornado Taught Yarmouth About Trees

On July 23, 2019, an EF1 tornado touched down in Yarmouth with winds near 110 mph, then crossed to Harwich. It tore the roof off a hotel on Route 28, and the National Weather Service noted numerous pine trees snapped near their bases. Roads were blocked for days while crews cleared the debris.

Most storms are not tornadoes, but the lesson holds: tall pitch pines growing in Yarmouth sand have shallow roots and brittle trunks, and the ones closest to the house are the real risk. A walk-through before fall nor’easter season lets us mark leaning, dead or crowded trees, thin the canopy where wind catches it, and remove the ones that cannot be saved before they come down on their own.

Historic District and Marsh Edge Projects

The north side of Yarmouth falls inside the Old King’s Highway Regional Historic District, which reviews exterior changes visible from a public way. If you are planning a new fence, wall or prominent hardscape on a Yarmouth Port property, the town’s district committee may need to sign off first. We raise that early so the design matches what is likely to be approved.

On the south side, many lots along Bass River, Parker’s River and Lewis Bay sit within 100 feet of marsh or shoreline, where the Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act gives the Yarmouth Conservation Commission a say over grading, clearing and new hardscape. Plantings and patios near the water also need to handle salt spray and the occasional storm tide.

Tree safety first, then everything else

Yarmouth jobs often start with the trees, because that is where storm damage starts. We are insured for that kind of work, the estimate visit costs nothing, and when a limb is hanging over the roof after a storm, same-day service is available when the schedule allows. Most requests get an answer within about an hour on business days.
